Safety of School Children

All school buses are yellow in colour and have words ‘School Bus’ written prominently. On a two way road, traffic from both directions should stop at a safe distance when children are getting off a school bus. Move after the bus has started moving.

Pedestrians’ Right of Way

Pedestrian crossings - also called "zebra crossing" - let pedestrians safely cross roads where there are no traffic signals. Drivers, including cyclists, must stop and let all pedestrians cross. Pedestrians have the right of way.On a junction, if the driver is not going straight but turning left, right or making a U–turn, he/she must give way to any pedestrian at or near the intersection on the road the driver is entering. A driver approaching a pedestrian crossing must drive at a speed at which the driver can, if necessary, stop safely before the crossing. A driver must give way to any pedestrian on a pedestrian crossing. A driver approaching a pedestrian crossing, must not overtake or pass a vehicle that is travelling in the same direction. A driver turning right from a road into a road-related area should gave way to an oncoming vehicle that is going straight ahead and to a pedestrian on the footpath.
